Psychologists have identified multiple and unique pathways for emotional input in developing our mental illness. Many of these pathways are directly involved in empathy, compassion, and interaction. But most kids experience them differently out of unconscious expectations or actions. What we do as adults is not consistent or normal, which means it can be hard for us to understand our behavior – even when children are emotionally supportive.
